Warm house, full pantry, bills you can pay.

How I get from October to March on one Social Security check.

My mother kept house in the hills of Kentucky, and I have kept this one in Ohio for more than thirty years. I put what we both learned into four books: keeping the heat in, filling the pantry, the week the power goes out, and the help you can ask for.

One cold month

Heat or eat.
You should never have to pick.

Growing up in the Kentucky hills, I was the door shutter. Every evening I closed each door that didn't need to be open, and we lived in the warm kitchen till bedtime. I still do a version of it in this Ohio house, and I keep the rooms I live in at 68 degrees, because at my age that's the least I let a room be.

The modern way

Heating the whole house, one cold month

  • Furnace or electric heat, whole house$240
  • Space heaters in the cold rooms$65
  • The drafts nobody ever sealed$40
A month$345

Frannie's way

The book's way, one cold month

  • Heat the one room you live in$95
  • Seal the three worst drafts$12
  • Warm the bed, not the bedroom, at night$0
A month$107

Typical amounts; yours depend on your house, your fuel and your rates.

But the dollars are the smallest part. What these books really buy you is a winter where you never stand in the kitchen deciding between the heat and the groceries.

Have them in the house before the first hard freeze.

Frannie's Kitchen Cards

62 of my lists, one to a page: my incense walk, my October list, what goes in my storm box, the warning signs that cold is winning. Print them, and they're on the cupboard door when the lights go out.

One trick from each book, to try this week

Book One

One stick of incense finds the draft

Hold it an inch from a window seam on a windy day. If the smoke leans or wavers, cold air is getting in. Tie the curtains back first, and never light it where someone uses oxygen.

Book Two

A month of meals for one, under $168

Breakfast, lunch and supper for 30 days, with a shopping list for each week. Priced at September 2026 average store prices: about $5.60 a day.

Book Three

The first hours without power

Unplug the TV and the microwave, and leave one lamp switched on so you know when the power is back. By the fourth hour, pick one room to live in, and leave the doors to rooms with water pipes open a hand's width.

Book Four

Ask if your age moves you up the line

In some states, people 60 and older can apply for heating help up to a month before everyone else. Call in the fall and ask. The book has the office and the phone number for your state.

346 tricks like these, in four books.

“I did the incense walk like she says on a windy morning and could not believe it. The smoke went right into the wall under my kitchen sink. 30 years in this house and I never looked back there. Went to the dollar store that afternoon.”

  • ★★★★★

“I like that she tells you what it costs and what it might save and what to do if it fails. Other books just say do this. Frannie says here is what if it doesnt work, which is when I need help the most.”

    Darlene Frannie's Winter Book
  • ★★★★★

“The thirty days of winter meals for one has been a lifesaver. I used to waste half of what I bought cause I cook for 1 now. This one tells you what to do with the rest. Chili on the baked potato was good!”

About Frannie

“My mother never called it preparing. She called it paying attention in the fall, so you don't have to worry in March.”

I grew up in the hills of Kentucky. My mother found the drafts by walking the rooms after supper with her hand out, the way you feel a child's forehead.

I made my first October list in 1973, the year Walter and I married, and I have made one every fall since. I have kept this house in Lawrence County, Ohio, for more than thirty years. Walter passed in 2011. That first winter I still cooked for two, and every Thursday I scraped half of it into the trash. On a fixed check, that hurts. So I learned to do it for one.

I priced the food at September 2026 average store prices, put a warning wherever a trick can hurt somebody, and where you need someone licensed for gas, wiring or the furnace, I say so.

I wrote mine down for Carl, his sister and my five grandchildren. If it gets you through a winter too, I'll be glad.

If you do one thing this week, put a thermometer you can read without your glasses in the room you sit in. If it reads under 68, warm that room first.

Plain answers to fair questions

What do I get? Is it a paper book?

PDF books, not paper ones. You get The Warm House, The Winter Pantry, Storm Week and The Help Nobody Mentions, each in regular and large print, all four in one file, and 62 Kitchen Cards to print. The Bill Book comes along with its large print and an audio edition where I read it to you, about 86 minutes. Read on a phone, a tablet or a computer, or print a page, a chapter or the whole book.

Do I need to be good with computers?

No. After you pay, a page opens with a button for each book, and the same links come to your email. Press one and the book opens. The links don't expire, so you can open that email again next month. If a link gives you trouble, reply to the email and I'll sort it out with you.

I'm on a fixed income. Will these pay for themselves?

Many tricks cost nothing or a few dollars. The meal plan for one comes to under $168 for the month at September 2026 average store prices. Book Four shows you heating help and programs you may not know you can ask for. And if the books aren't worth it to you, the 30-day guarantee gives you the full $37 back.

I watch your videos for free. Why buy the books?

The books keep all 346 tricks in order, so you find the one you need in January without hunting for a video. You also get the 73 recipes, the large print, and the help offices and phone numbers for all 50 states and DC.

Is it hard? Will I have to buy things?

No. A tube of caulk is about $3, and a lot of tricks cost nothing at all. Each one is a few plain steps, like rope caulk in a window seam or a hot water bottle at the foot of the bed. Where a job needs a licensed plumber or electrician, the book tells you so.

Is the advice safe for an older person on their own?

I wrote it for people my age, a lot of us on our own. Book One keeps the room you live in at 68°F or warmer, because a cooler house can bring on hypothermia in an older body. A space heater stays 3 feet from anything that can burn, plugs straight into the wall and goes off before you sleep. If you're away on a cold night, the heat stays at 55°F or higher, for the pipes. Never test for drafts with incense where anyone uses oxygen, and never heat the house with the stove or oven. For gas, wiring or the furnace itself, call someone licensed.

Can I give it to my mother or father?

Yes. Print the large print and the Kitchen Cards for them, and tape the cards up where they'll see them. Then open Book Four to their state, sit down together and make the calls for the help they may have coming.

What if the books aren't right for me?

30-day money-back guarantee. If the books aren't right for you, reply to the delivery email within 30 days and I'll send back the full $37. You keep the files. Can't find the email? Look in your spam folder for Frugal Frannie ([email protected]), or write to [email protected].
